Mercedes-Benz is a trademark and passenger car manufacturer of the premium class, trucks, buses and other vehicles of the German concern Daimler AG. It is one of the most recognizable automotive brands in the world. The headquarters of Mercedes-Benz is in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

The name of the trademark was adopted in 1926 as a result of the merger of two competing firms, Benz & Cie. (founded by Karl Benz) and Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (founded by Gottlieb Daimler), into a single concern – Daimler-Benz. The name of the brand is formed from the two most significant vehicles of the merged companies – Mercedes 1901 and Benz Patent-Motorwagen in 1886.

In 2016, the Mercedes-Benz brand is estimated at 43.490 billion dollars, holding the second place (after Toyota) among car manufacturers and the ninth place among all brands of the world. According to BrandZ, in 2016 the brand ranks 39th among the most expensive brands with a value of 22.708 billion dollars.

The lineup

The current classification of cars was developed in the mid-1990s. Each class (German Klasse) designates the body type and market segment, for example: SL – Sport Leicht (“sporty, light” – roadster); CLK – Comfort-Leicht-Kurz (“comfortable, light, shortened” – a coupe of medium size); G – Geländewagen (SUV) and the like. In 2015, the names of some classes were revised. So, for example, the M-class was called the GLE-class, and the GL-class was called the GLS-class.

As of the beginning of 2017 under the brand Mercedes-Benz the following cars are produced:

• B-class family / subcompact
• C-Class sedan / coupe / wagon / convertible
• CLA-class compact sedan / estate
• CLS-class four-door coupe / station wagon
• E-class business sedan / coupe / wagon / convertible

The Mercedes-Benz Heckflosse (tailfin) (series W108, W109, W110, W111 and W112) are a car series from the German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz, that caused a great sensation during its initial presentation on September 17, 1959 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The S-Class produced between 1959 and 1972 were Heckflosse (Fin Tail). Their external appearance is in sharp contrast compared to the previous series, the Ponton. Jump to Manuals

The W110 was the Mercedes-Benz entry level line of midsize automobiles in the mid-1960s. The W110 was one of Mercedes' 'Fintail' (German: Heckflosse) series. It was introduced with a choice of one petrol unit and a Diesel plant, both displacing 1.9 L, the cars were built to compete on the North American market with the car having been designed with an American style-inspired rear adorned with two small 'fins' placed above the tail lights. The W110 1.9 L M121 gasoline engine and diesel OM621 inline-four where introduced as the 190c and 190Dc sedans respectively in April, 1961.

The W110 line was refreshed in July, 1965 to become the 200 Petrol and 200D Diesel model vehicles for 1966 in North America. At the same time, a six-cylinder 230 (successor to the Mercedes 220) became part of the W110 line. Production lasted just three more years, with the W115 220 and 220D introduced in 1968. The W110 and the 6-cylinder W111 were the first series of Mercedes cars to be extensively crash tested for occupant safety.

The Heckflosses (Fintail) were produced between 1959 and 1968 for medium ranges and until 1972 for class S. Different versions were available depending on the year, and type – sedan, coupe or station wagon.

First versions :
W 110 : 1961 – 1968
W 111 : 1959 – 1968
W 112 : 1961 – 1965
Second version :
W 108 : 1965 – 1972
W 109 : 1965 – 1972

Despite the commercial success, this series later became the unloved star to the star for several reasons:

• The silhouette is common to the 110 series (medium range), 111 (entry and mid-range high) and 112 (upper segment of the high range): the 190Dc taxi offers the same appearance as the luxurious 112, which was overloaded with chrome to differentiate
• The W111 sacrifices to the American fashion effect of the early 1960s, adding ailerons and panoramic windows. The fins are considered dangerous, while Daimler-Benz passes its W111 crash tests, and are expensive both in manufacturing and repair.
• The series ends up being unloved because it has departed from the proprieties of discretion, respectability, chic propriety to which the brand is attached.
• The 190Dc taxi offers the same appearance as the luxurious 112, which was overloaded with chrome to differentiate.

Phase 1 of the W110 type (the 190c and 190dc) replaced the 180c / 180dc of the W120 type and the 190b / 190db of the W121 type.

W110 Series Timeline of Production

Production of the new 200, 200 D, 220 D and 230 models began in July 1965 with the 200 and 200 D replaced 190 c and 190 dc respectively. At the Brussels Motor Show in January 1965 a revised car range was presented including the 'Universal estate' model that was based on the revised 110 series. The external changes were minimal, however a 6-cylinder estate model was made available - the 230 Universal and the 230 S Universal based on the 111 series.
